Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, recently visited students and staff at Solihull College & University Centre’s Woodlands Campus.
The Mayor spent over two hours touring a range of departments including Engineering, Bricklaying, Hairdressing & Barbering, Carpentry & Joinery, and more.
WorldSkills Gold medallist, Harry Scolding, spoke with the mayor at length in the Carpentry & Joinery workshop, showing him his recent projects and gold medal.
Engaging the students who recently helped build the College’s Bricklaying workshop, the Mayor picked up a spirit level and ‘assessed’ the current project they were working on.
He also met with West Atlantic apprentices in the College’s Aircraft Hangar, who shared their positive journey at the College, and T Level students, who had the opportunity to ask questions in the College’s Greater Birmingham & Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT) ‘Spoke’.
Later, tweeting from his @andy4wm account, Andy Street shared: “You name it, @SolihullCollege can offer it – even an aircraft hangar! From apprentices’ bricklaying to future plane mechanics, the College is training people for quality jobs. They’re also producing award winners, including @worldskillsuk gold medallist Harry Scolding.”

The in-depth tour, delivered by Principal Dr Rebecca Gater and other members of the College’s Senior Leadership Team, gave Andy Street an insight into the continuous investment the College is making to its facilities.
The Mayor commended the College for its continued commitment to supporting the community by preparing highly trained students and apprentices to fill the local digital and industry skills gap.
