Triple Distinction and a Top Award — Danidu’s Engineering Journey at South & City College Birmingham

If you’re thinking about studying Engineering in Birmingham, take inspiration from Danidu Fernando; a student whose hard work, talent and determination have helped him achieve incredible success at South & City College Birmingham.

Danidu recently completed his Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering with the *highest possible grade: triple distinction star (DDD)**. From day one, he impressed his tutors with his commitment to problem-solving, technical understanding, and teamwork. He’s known for his sharp curiosity, always asking the right questions and diving deep into engineering principles, whether working independently or as part of a group.

He even went the extra mile by completing an additional unit, Static Mechanical Principles in Practice, showing a clear passion for learning and a genuine interest in engineering beyond the classroom.

His achievements were recognised at the College’s Annual Apprenticeship Awards, where he received a Herbert Austin Award, a prestigious honour named after Lord Herbert Austin, the legendary British engineer and founder of the Austin Motor Company. The award celebrates rising stars in engineering who show originality, resilience and drive. Danidu was a standout winner.

What makes Danidu’s success even more remarkable is the way he has overcome personal challenges. Living with a visual impairment, he’s faced obstacles that might stop many in their tracks. But through sheer determination and a positive attitude, he’s proved that nothing should stand in the way of ambition.

Speaking about his time at college, Danidu praised the support from his tutors and the inclusive, hands-on environment that allowed him to thrive. His story is a brilliant example of what’s possible when talent is supported by the right opportunities.

Danidu’s next step is studying Mechanical Engineering at Aston University, and with his track record, we’re confident he’ll continue to excel.
