The GBSIoT Hub hosted an exciting demonstration of innovation and collaboration as Fawaz, a final-year student from Aston University, conducted tests for his project titled “Using 2D LiDAR and Camera for Human Agnostic Mapping” right here in our factory. His efforts were supervised by Kolawole Adeyeye, our Engineering Placement Student from Birmingham City University.
Fawaz’s project focuses on the integration of 2D LiDAR and camera technologies to create a mapping system that operates independently of human input. This cutting-edge approach has significant potential applications in various fields, including autonomous navigation, industrial automation, and advanced robotics. By combining LiDAR’s precise distance measurement capabilities with the visual data captured by cameras, Fawaz aims to develop a robust mapping system capable of operating in diverse environments.
During today’s testing, Fawaz’s robot navigated the factory floor, gathering data and refining its mapping algorithms. The real-world environment of the factory provided an ideal testing ground, presenting the robot with a range of challenges to overcome. This hands-on experience is crucial for Fawaz to evaluate and improve the performance of his system, ensuring it can handle practical scenarios outside of controlled lab conditions.
Kolawole Adeyeye’s supervision added an extra layer of expertise to the testing process. As an Engineering Placement Student from Birmingham City University, Kolawole brought valuable insights and support, helping Fawaz troubleshoot issues and optimise the robot’s functionality. This collaboration not only enhanced the testing phase but also provided a meaningful exchange of knowledge and skills between the students.
We love seeing bright minds collaborating and innovating within our facilities. It’s a testament to the importance of providing opportunities for students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings. By fostering such collaborations, we contribute to the development of the next generation of engineers and technologists, equipping them with the experience and confidence to tackle future challenges.
