GBSIoT Celebrates a Decade-Long License Extension by DfE

We are thrilled to announce that the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT) has secured an extension of its license with the Department for Education (DfE) to operate as an Institute of Technology for an additional ten years. This milestone reflects the hard work and collaboration that define GBSIoT.

This extension is a great achievement, demonstrating the dedication of the GBSIoT team and our partners. Over the past five years, we have shown our commitment to excellence in education and training, and this new agreement allows us to continue our mission in the evolving skills landscape.

In the past year alone, the GBSIoT Hub has welcomed over 2,000 visitors, hosting a range of activities such as teaching and training sessions, CPD masterclasses for both teachers and students, and employer meetings. Notably, our ‘Supporting Women into Engineering’ initiative has shown our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the sector.

Our Learning Factory has served over a thousand learners, including our pioneering T Level students who have undertaken projects set by our Employer Board. This facility has also supported many undergraduate and postgraduate students in their applied research projects, reinforcing the Learning Factory’s role as a hub for practical learning, technical skills, and innovation.

Entering the fifth year of our Licence Agreement with the DfE, we are proud to have engaged over 3,000 young people through STEM lessons and activities. These outreach efforts are crucial for inspiring the next generation and ensuring a skilled pipeline of talent for the future.

Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch and Chair of the GBSIoT Board, expressed his gratitude, saying, “As Chair of GBSIoT, I extend my thanks to all our colleagues and partners for their relentless hard work, passion, and collaboration. It is your dedication that has made GBSIoT the success it is today. Looking ahead, we are excited about the next five years. Together, we will make an even greater impact for the benefit of our residents, learners, and employers. Together we are stronger.”

As we look ahead, we remain committed to fostering innovation and excellence in education and training. The next decade promises developments, and we are eager to navigate the emerging skills landscape with renewed vigour.
