On April 5th, the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT) hosted a special event for engineering students and staff from Solihull College & University Centre and Birmingham City University (BCU). The purpose of the event was to give participants an insight into smart factory technology, and to help them connect their curriculum to this exciting and rapidly evolving field.
The event was the first of four consecutive weekly sessions, each of which will focus on a different aspect of smart factory technology. The sessions will cover topics such as Internet of things (IoT(, the connections between real assets and virtual assets, and how they can use the data that is generated for process optimisation. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from experts in these fields, and to see cutting-edge technologies in action.
The event was hosted at the GBSIoT’s state-of-the-art facilities, which are equipped with the largest Cyber Physical Manufacturing Rig in Europe. Participants were able to get hands-on experience with industry level robots and other smart factory tools, and to see how these technologies are transforming the manufacturing industry.
